Advanced Language Training
Drawing on his background as an instructor in linguistics with the University of Maryland’s Far East Division, George Baker has given workshops in Mexico to government agencies on Advanced English Pronunciation. The workshops are meant for professionals who have intermediate or advanced abilities in English.
The workshop focuses on the similarities and differences between the English and Spanish phonological systems. The workshop builds on to prior reports on “Overcoming the Mexican Accent in English.”
The same workshop, only in reverse, is offered to English speakers who seek greater competence in Spanish. The workshops are available for class sizes of 5-35 professionals.
The first lesson in either workshop is the same:
The starting point for improving your pronunciation in a second language is to become more aware of how you speak your native language.
At first, this guidance makes little sense, but within the first 20 minutes of the workshop, this truth will come alive.
